On the 3rd of September, the developing world wide martial art of Haidong Gumdo holds it’s first ever Nationals in New Zealand- called the “New Zealand Mulimpia”.
Haidong Gumdo is a Korean sword art utilizing a 90-100cm sword. Beginniners start with a wooden sword and progress through to a metal sword.
The competition art includes: Patterns, Paper cutting, Bamboo cutting and a form of combat sword. In July this year, New Zealand had a team attend the World Championships. The team returned with 2 Golds, 2 Silvers and 4 Bronzes.
The New Zealand Mulimpia (held at Tauranga Boys’ College Main Gymnasium) is open for the public to come and watch – hopefully encouraging people to “take up the sword”. The event begins at 9am. Come along and catch the action.
