Gyuk Gum – Arranged Sparring

  • Start with Juk-Do (Shinai) sword tips crossed,
  • KIHAP on first cut
  • Left and Right denote origin (or hand position)

1. Attack: 3 x Mid (centre) cut—back then to Gyun-geuk,

Defend: Left high block (tip to R), Right high block (tip to L)Left high block (tip to R), then to Gyun-geuk,

2. Attack: Mid (centre) cut—then Vertical Block (Cricket Batting Block) Left leg back into Beom-Se then Gyun-geuk,

Defend: Right High (Cross) block — then Right 45deg Downward Angle cut to leg (right to left) Sodose, then Gyun-geuk,

3. Attack: Mid (centre) cut—then Vertical Block (Cricket Batting Block) Left leg back into Beom-Se, then step Left (left leg moving out to Kima-Se) 45deg, Left Middle cut (as in Basic pattern), then Gyun-geuk,

Defend: Right High (Cross) block — then Right 45deg Downward Angle cut to leg (right to left), step back right leg (Beom Se), Right Vertical Block (at 45deg to right), then Gyun-geuk,

4. Attack: Right foot step in, Mid (centre) cut, spin 360* – juk-do over head (stepping Left foot forward then right) and middle cut under block in Sodose

Defend: Left High (Parallel) block — then step back Right leg (Beom-Se), Right Vertical Block (at 45deg to right), then Gyun-geuk,

5. Attack: Step Right foot, quick push block to middle to defender sword, cut neck, “running’ by” – Variation: cut to wrist instead of neck (fast!)

Defend: None

6. 1st Attack: Kihap (as warning) Mid (centre) cut with skip step

Defend: Right high (cross) block then step right foot back into Kimsae, drop sword behind back to block/defend neck/back

2nd Attack: Step past Left then right, and turn around facing OKI’s back and slice back with light Middle Cut (Defender MUST block)

7. Attack: Kihap (as warning) step left and Jochun-Se (down cut Gyun-geuk but NOT begi)

Defend: Slide Left foot back into Golden Rooster Stance, stab to throat (before attacker starts cutting in downward motion!)

8. Attack: Mid (centre) cut 3X while advancing.

Defend: Left High block, then Right, then Left (3X) retreating (stepping right foot back, left foot back, right foot back), then step out 45deg with Left foot (Kima-Se) and middle cut (not connecting but also not blocked)
